| Anyone that has been paying attention to this market, knows that there has been a lot of movement. Unfortunately, the bulk of that activity has not been in the warehouse shipping products, but rather companies selling their optoelectronics divisions to other companies or just leaving the space outright and taking a loss. So why has there been such a retreat - en masse - out of this multi-billion dollar market? The answer isn't a simple one, but it comes down to too many players vying for too little revenue while spending too much on R&D. However, the bad news will be over relatively soon. By 2004, the laser market will have experienced a full recovery and, whichever companies are left standing, will reap the windfall. All of the consolidation going on now will help dry up the supply spicket so that the demand for lasers goes up in 2004, prices will level off and revenues will grow strongly. By 2006, the whole market will be just under $6.9 Billion and have a 2002 to 2006 CAGR of 35%.
