The SOHO/consumer WLAN equipment market is becoming an increasingly difficult environment in which to compete. While shipment volumes have increased strongly since 2000, prices have eroded sharply over the past several years, and In-Stat believes that few vendors are making much money in this market segment at present. We still expect shipment volumes to increase strongly over the forecast period, driven both by growing broadband adoption as well as increasing use of home networks. Importantly, WLAN equipment will increasingly be used to network consumer electronics devices, as well as VoIP communications. A key market shift is the transition from the 802.11g air standard to MIMO-based products.
This report examines the overall SOHO/consumer WLAN equipment market. Unit shipment and revenue market shares for 2004 are provided for SOHO/consumer APs, wireless routers, wireless Residential Gateways (RGs), and external SOHO/consumer WLAN NICs. Five-year forecasts, from 2005 - 2009, are provided for SOHO/consumer APs, wireless routers, wireless RGs, and external/embedded SOHO/consumer WLAN NICs. Finally, brief vendor profiles are given. This report will be particularly useful to product managers and marketing directors in SOHO/consumer WLAN equipment and semiconductor vendor companies, financial analysts covering the WLAN equipment and semiconductor markets, and consultants advising clients in the WLAN equipment and semiconductor markets.
