Set top boxes with Internet access are defined as those set top boxes that directly access the Internet for browsing or interactive services. The market for these boxes is divided into the Cable, DBS, DTT, DSL and video game console segments. Demand for Internet set top boxes is being driven by an increase in broadband penetration rates and consumer requests for iTV services. Though this market is in its infancy, with only about 7 million boxes shipped worldwide in 2000, significant growth is expected to occur by 2005. A significant amount of discussion has occurred in the industry, with regard to offering "full" Internet access or limited access via a "walled garden." The report gives arguments for both, as well as insight into trends affecting each segment. The report examines set top box manufacturers, connectivity, software providers, and presents a segmented worldwide forecast through 2005.
