IP Service Switches: Creating Value at the Network Edge
IP service switches are deployed at service provider network edge POPs to deliver a variety of possible IP services to multiple customers, from one network location. They enable service providers to offer managed security services at greatly reduced cost, and also offer service providers substantial opportunities to earn incremental revenues beyond basic IP connectivity.
This report profiles the three major vendors of IP service switches, Nortel, CoSine, and Lucent, as well as, key start-up vendors. Perspectives of Qwest, a service provider that has been at the leading edge in the use of IP service switches, are also given. Equipment vendor market shares in 2001 are described, and a five-year forecast of the market is made.
