Wireless Sensor Networks: Solutions and Market Opportunities

Advances in wireless networking, micro-fabrication and integration (for example, sensors and actuators manufactured using micro-electro mechanical system technology, or MEMS), and embedded microprocessors have enabled a new generation of massive-scale sensor networks suitable for a range of commercial and military applications. The technology promises to revolutionize the way we live, work, and interact with the physical environment.
In the not-too-distant future, tiny, dirt-cheap sensors may be literally sprayed on to roads, walls, or machines, creating a digital skin that senses a variety of physical phenomena of interest; monitor pedestrian or vehicular traffic in human-aware environments and intelligent transportation grids, report wild life habitat conditions for environmental conservation, detect forest fire to aid rapid emergency response, and track job and supply chains in smart factories. Unlike current in formation services such as those on the Internet where information can easily get stale or be useless because it is too generic, sensor

Industry Risk Ratings Synopsis This Industry Risk Ratings report from IBISWorld evaluates the inherent risks associated with the Semiconductor Machinery Manufacturing in the US industry. Industry Risk is assumed to be 'the difficulty, or otherwise, of the business operating environment'. The report looks at the operational risk associated with this industry. Three types of risk are recognized in our analysis. These are: risk arising from within the industry itself (structural risk), risks arising from the expected future performance of the industry (growth risk) and risk arising from forces external to the industry (external sensitivity risk). This approach is new in that it analyses non-financial information surrounding each industry. Industries are scored on a 9-point scale, where 1 represents the lowest risk and 9 the highest. The Industry Risk score measures expected Industry Risk over the coming 12-18 months. Industry Definition This US industry comprises establishments primarily engaged in manufacturing wafer processing equipment, semiconductor assembly and

IDTechEx expect the spend on printed and thin film electronics beyond conventional silicon to be $1.58 Billion this year. The majority of this is for OLED display panels ($0.69 Billion) which is the value of the panel and not the final device. Virtually all of this is non printed and on glass. Second largest by value is photovoltaics (PV) beyond conventional crystalline and amorphous silicon, accounting for $0.4 Billion. This is not organic PV however, which is still some time away from commercialization, but inorganic technologies such as CIGS and CdTe devices. For example, First Solar has an order book exceeding $2 Billion for CdTe PV devices which they will be delivering over several years. Third largest is not a specific product, but a value for inks for $0.21 Billion, which are used for multiple different applications such as interconnects for switches, membrane keyboards, windscreen heaters.
R-OADMs From the Core to the Edge

ROADMs are systems that allow the very flexible, remote selection of wavelengths transiting a given intermediate node on a fiber network for dropping and/or adding. They allow access to any of the wavelengths going through a node (or, in more limited ROADM implementations, access to a set of the transiting wavelengths) for use of the data on the chosen wavelength and the possibility of adding to, or modifying, the data on that wavelength for transmitting it on to the next node(s). They also allow the interconnection of multiple intersecting networks (multiple-degree nodes) at the optical level, avoiding the expense and complexity of OEO conversions to achieve the interconnection. The device offers the promise of substantial savings in operational costs, and many operational benefits.

Now in nearly mid-2008, the ROADM has become a standard part of long-haul networks — to be included as a matter of course in any new

Components for R-OADMs

This report investigates the components used by the systems known as Reconfigurable Optical Add Drop Multiplexers (R-OADMs.) These devices are currently available in equipment from major equipment vendors. These products are based on a variety of sub-system technologies that have been developed largely by small start-up companies.
The flexibility introduced by R-OADMs has the potential to offer great operations cost savings as well as possibly capital cost savings and, ultimately, new revenue sources. Because of these potentials, this system development is of great interest to all major carriers. Even in this time of extremely tight capital budgets, everyone is interested in investments that offer substantial operations savings.

This report describes the R-OADM technology, the market potential with detailed forecasts and the vendors involved in the component market.

This is an update of earlier reports on the same subject from IGI. This report contains completely new
